A Vessel Of Change And Transformation
Is a non-profit organisation that aims to celebrate, nurture and promote universal excellence in Medicine. Owing to our past history and inequalities that were brought by the apartheid system, transformation is slowly in progress.

About US
Background
The first ever post-apartheid act of transformation by students, was displayed by the “Fees Must Fall” movement in 2015. This laid ground for transformation in the South African education system.
In Medicine, there is an identified urgent need for deliberate, proactive measures to create an inclusive, amicable work and learning environment that will allow all Doctors to thrive irrespective of race, culture, religion, gender and socioeconomic status.
In a one of its kind local study published in the BMC International Health and Human Rights journal in 2016 titled “Race trouble: experiences of Black medical specialist trainees in South Africa”. Highlighted the existing barriers that hinder fair opportunities, clinical experience, success and retention of black specialists in Medicine.
The Undocumented Personal Experiences
✔ Unfortunately most black Doctors still experience the same barriers highlighted by this study to date.
✔ There is a need for a mind shift to transform Medicine culture in South Africa to enable fair, transparent and equal experience for all Doctors irrespective of gender, background or race.
✔ Currently there is a lack of standardized affirmative action to guard against unfair treatment of Doctors/trainees in the workplace which gives rise to increased burden of mental health illnesses amongst the Doctor community.
✔ This adversely affects productivity and harnesses potential South African future scientists. We at Minority Doctors Forum South Africa mitigate these identified challenges through our structured Mentorship programme.
